PA (Physician Assistant)
A PA is a "Physician Assistant." This professional works under the supervision of a physician complementing medical care, including conducting physical exams, diagnosing and treating illnesses, ordering and interpreting tests, assisting in surgery, writing prescriptions, and counseling on wellness and preventive care. The PA uses autonomous decision making for patient care as part of the physician team model. This professional is a graduate of a PA educational program (many are Masters degree) which combines class room and clinical instruction.
ARNP (Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner) and CNM (Certified Nurse Midwives)
An ARNP is an "Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner." This professional is a nurse with advanced practice skills who has completed graduate-level education (Masters or Doctorate degree) with specific training and certification in the diagnosis and management of common as well as complex medical conditions. Nurse Practitioners also focus on health promotion, disease prevention and health education. Specialties within ARNP designations include CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists), CNM (Certified Nurse Midwives), CNP (Certified Nurse Practitioners), and CNS (Certified Nurse Specialists). Each certification requires specific licensing, continuing education, and examination of the highest degree.
